History
It is the central University for Tibetan Studies located in the Sarnath, Varanasi. It was established in Varanasi India in the year 1967 as an autonomous organization under the Union Ministry of Culture.
The founder of CIHTS, Benares was the Pt. Jawahar Lal Nehru. He consulted with the Tenzin Gyatso, the Dalai Lama and decided to establish such type of institution. The Government of India decided to accord it with the status of an autonomous body in 1977 under the Ministry of Education, Department of Culture, and Government of India with the full financial support.
It was declared as a Deemed University on April 5 of 1988 by the Indian government. Currently it is headed by Prof. Ngawang Samten. It aimed to achieve excellence success in the field of Tibetology, Buddhology and Himalayan Studies.
This institute was officially announced as an university at 14th January in the year 2009. It was inaugurated by His Holiness the XIV Dalai Lama. Now it is known as the Central University of Higher Tibetan Studies.
Objectives of the Institute
- The aim of establishing the institution is educating the youths of the Tibet and the Himalayan border students.
- The another aim of establishing the institution is to incorporate the Sanskrit, Hindi and other modern Indian languages.
